Bike Setup
Turning an average bike into something extraordinary.
So you can't decide between a road bike or a mountain bike. Why not get the best of both worlds. Even better, go single speed.
You don't need to have a lot of money to have a kick ass bike. You can take any bike, with a decent frame (light weight aluminum is my preference), and turn it into a good reliable bike. The bombhills.com project is based on a Trek mountain bike frame.

Starting with a lightweight frame is important, otherwise you efforts will be in vein.
Fork:
Replace shocks with a fixed fork.
Recommended Fork: Surly 1X1
Tires:
You want some tread for the rain, but go really low on the size to make your ride easier. Finding a 26 X 1 tire is not easy, but the smaller the better.
Recommended Tires: Bontrager 26 X 1.5 tires.
Single Speed:
Converting to a single speed is easy. Our project bike has only a rear brake and we fine it adequate. The front derailleur and rear derailleur can also be removed. A single speed kit contains almost everything needed. You will need to purchase a single speed chain.
Recommended Kit: Single Speed Kit.
Recommended Chain: SRAM Single Speed
Paint:
Painting your frame is fairly easy. Our project bike is painted matte black. You will need to strip the bike down to just the frame. Some special tools are necessary to remove the crank (a crank puller). Once the bike is stripped down, you can sand the frame with some fine sand paper. Then hang the bike up with a rope or hanger through the frame and spray with several light coats of paint. Follow the directions on the can.
